Employee and accountant reviewing professional membership expense paperwork

Published 27 October 2026. A practical explanation of existing HMRC rules checked today.

A professional membership renewal is a useful prompt to review your expenses. If you are employed and pay the fee yourself, check the eligibility of that particular payment before assuming it qualifies.

Which payments may qualify?

Eligible costs can include professional fees required to do your job and annual subscriptions to approved bodies relevant to your work. Life memberships, employer-paid fees and unapproved organisations do not qualify. Keep receipts or other evidence showing the amounts paid.

Relief is not a full reimbursement

The value depends on eligible spending and your tax rate. For example, £200 of qualifying expenses relieved at 20% gives £40 of relief, not a £200 refund. You must have paid tax in the relevant year; relief cannot exceed that tax.

How do you claim?

You can claim for the current tax year and the previous four. Self Assessment filers must claim through their return. Other employees can use the eligibility and claim service linked from the official HMRC guidance.

Prepare a clear evidence file

List the organisation, membership type, amount, payment date and any years for which you have already claimed. Add membership confirmation and employer reimbursement details. This makes missing receipts easier to spot and helps prevent duplicate claims for the same expenditure.

Before a consultation, note why the membership relates to your actual role. If your job or employer changed during the period, flag that too rather than treating every payment as identical.

Speak to ZipTax about your professional expenses and the appropriate claim route. Bring the supporting documents so the review is based on your individual circumstances.
