News review for 22 October 2026. HMRC’s 21 October bulletin urges families who missed their August confirmation to act before 30 November. Eligible claims can be restarted, with backdating limited to up to three months.

When can payments continue after age 16?

Child Benefit can continue until age 20 where the young person is in qualifying education or training, was accepted before turning 19 and does not receive Universal Credit themselves. Examples include A levels, T levels and certain vocational courses up to level 3. University degrees and apprenticeships do not qualify. The person claiming Child Benefit must tell HMRC about the continuing education.

Check what has happened to your claim

Find your latest HMRC message and check your bank statement for the last payment. Have the exact course name and start date ready. If you already submitted an update, retain the confirmation so you can establish what has been done.

The November reminder does not mean every family must make a new claim. It is particularly relevant where payments stopped because continuing education was not confirmed. Checking now gives you more time to resolve questions before the end of November.

Could higher income create a tax charge?

The High Income Child Benefit Charge may apply if either partner’s individual adjusted net income exceeds £60,000. This is not simply salary or combined household income: taxable interest and dividends can count, while qualifying pension contributions and Gift Aid can reduce the figure. The charge is 1% of Child Benefit for each £200 above the threshold, reaching the full benefit amount at £80,000.
