HMRC needs to receive the paper return

The usual paper filing deadline is 31 October 2026. Posting on that day is not enough: HMRC must receive the return by the deadline. The usual online deadline is 31 January 2027. Check your own notice, as a later notice to file can carry a different deadline.

Gather your information before you start

ZipTax recommends keeping your HMRC notice, UTR and records for 6 April 2025 to 5 April 2026 together. Identify the employment documents, business records, rental income and other income sources relevant to you. Check that you have the correct year's form and the supplementary pages your circumstances require.

Before posting, review the figures, signature and destination address. Retain a copy and proof of posting. If you choose online filing, test your access beforehand and keep the submission confirmation. A short checklist makes it easier to see what is still missing.

Filing and payment are separate jobs

The usual payment deadline for 2025/26 tax is 31 January 2027. Filing earlier helps you understand the bill and plan for it. Submitting a return does not itself pay the tax.

Do not ignore a filing obligation because the bill is small

Where a return is required, late filing can trigger an initial £100 penalty, with further penalties as the delay continues. Late payment is considered separately. If you have already missed a deadline, act promptly; if a penalty arrives and you have a reasonable excuse, check the appeal route.

Make your consultation useful

Bring your HMRC notice, income summary and questions to a ZipTax consultation. We can discuss your Self Assessment position and the next steps, including information still needed. Guidance checked on 23 October 2026; always check your individual HMRC notice for the deadline that applies to you.
